Single-Tier Applications
The data, business logic and the user interfaces are combined into one application or database. It resides on one personal computer.

Two-Tier Applications
The application is distributed among a Client personal computer and a Server. The client is responsible for the user interfaces and the business logic, and a server houses only the data. Called a client-server relationship, any change to the database requires client upgrade.

N-Tier Applications
The data, business logic and user interfaces are completely separated in different locations. The user interface is on a Client PC with the business logic being both at the Client PC and a server. Data can be distributed among different servers over an expansive geographic area.
